FOUR REASONS GOD CREATED SEX

To understand the reasons why God made sex we must first and foremost understand why God made man and woman. The Bible tells us why God made man and woman:

“For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.”

1 Corinthians 11:7-9 (KJV)
God made man, the male human being, to image him or in other words live out his attributes and by doing so bring him glory. God is shown in the Bible to be a leader, a provider, a protector, a teacher and a lover of pleasure and people. Man, and his masculine human nature were designed by God to display all of these traits with his life through his positions as a husband, father and worker.

For man to fully image God with his life, he needed another being similar to himself, yet very different from himself. He needed a companion. He needed someone weaker than him who would need his protection. He needed someone who would depend on him for his provision. He needed someone who need his leadership and his teaching. He needed someone to bear his children so he could image God as a father. He needed someone to care for the needs of his home so he could go out into the world and image God as a worker. He needed someone to love and sacrifice for just as God loves and sacrifices himself for his people. And he needed someone to bring him pleasure, just as God desires to have pleasure in his people.

So, God created woman for man to give man someone upon whom he could exercise all God’s attributes as a husband. And God gave woman the ability to bear man’s children so man could exercise all of God’s attributes as father. And finally, he made woman to be the keeper of man’s home to enable man to exercise God’s attributes as a worker.

These truths form the foundation for why God created sex. And now we can show from the Scriptures the four reasons God created sex.

God Created Sex to Image His Desire for Oneness with His People
Jesus Christ in the following prayer to the Father made the following statement of God’s desire for oneness with his people:

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”

John 17:20-21 (KJV)
Along this same theme of the oneness which God desires with his people, the Bible states the following:

“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

2 Corinthians 6:16 (KJV)
So, God created human sexuality and commanded for man and woman to come together as one flesh to illustrate on a physical level God’s desires for oneness with his people:

“But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.”

Mark 10:6-8 (KJV)
And this is why God created the male sexual desire to indwell woman and to become one flesh with her. And this also why God created the female sexual nature with a desire to be indwelled by man.

God also designed another wonderful aspect of sex to reflect his desire for oneness with his people. During the post orgasmic phase of sex, a cocktail of hormones, God’s very own love potion, are released which can help bond a man and woman together emotionally and it also gives them a great sense of satisfaction and calmness.

God Created Sex to Image his Desire for the Beauty of His People
In the Old Testament we read a Psalm that is a prophecy of the Christ and his desire the beauty of his Church:

“So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.”

Psalm 45:11 (KJV)
And this is the reason God made men such visual creatures and he created in them such a strong and powerful desire for and reaction to female beauty. And this also why God created women with such a strong desire to make themselves beautiful and desirable to man.

God Created Sex to Image His Desire to Take Pleasure in His People
Not only does God desire oneness with his people and the beauty of his people, but God also desires to take pleasure in his people as the Scripture below tells us:

“For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.”

Psalm 149:4 (KJV)
And this is yet another reason why men are so pleasure oriented when it comes to sex. Yes, there is a desire for oneness, but this cannot be disconnected from a man’s desire for the unique and great physical pleasure he receives during sexual relations with a woman. And this also why God created woman with the ability to experience great physical sexual pleasure too, so that she could enhance man’s pleasure with her own pleasure.

God Used Sex as the Means of Reproduction for Mankind
God’s first command to mankind in Genesis 1:28 was “Be fruitful, and multiply”. When we take that together with the entire witness of the Bible, we understand that statement to mean God wants us to get married, have sex and make babies.

There are many Christians and non-Christians alike that believe the primary reason God made sex was for reproduction and the other aspects I just mentioned of the desire for oneness, for beauty and for pleasure are simply things God put in us to drive us to reproduce.

But I would humbly submit to you that such a belief is more aligned with a naturalistic and evolutionary view of biology and this belief does not at all align with the Word of God or even an objective view of biology.

The Bible tells us that God’s truth and purposes of his design can be seen in how he designed his creations:

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse”

Romans 1:20 (KJV)
Now does this mean that we don’t need the Bible and we can just look to nature for God’s truth? Absolutely not! The Bible is our guide to God’s creation, it is his owner’s manual. But if we first look to the Bible, we can then see in nature more of God’s truth which fully aligns with what God says in his Word.

So now let’s apply our knowledge of nature, specifically that of human biology, and tie that back with the Scriptures. Is a man’s penis and woman’s vagina only made for reproductive purposes? Are a woman’s breasts only made to feed children? The answer to both these questions is absolutely not. We know for a fact that God has created in man and woman a desire for sex that goes far beyond the desire to simply procreate. In fact, it interesting to point out woman is the only female mammal whose breasts are constantly protruding from her body even when she is no longer pregnant or nursing. A woman’s protruding breasts before she is pregnant and after she is done nursing services no reproductive purpose whatsoever.

Since we know that sexual relations in human beings have dual purposes and not just reproductive purposes, we must then ask these final questions. For which purposes are the sexual organs of human beings used the most? Is it for reproduction or for oneness, beauty and pleasure? The answer is very clear that it is the latter three.

Conclusion
God created man to image him as a husband, a father and a worker. He created woman for man so that man would have someone to need his leadership, provision and protection and so that man could image God as a husband.

Part of God’s attributes as husband to his people is his desire for oneness with his people, his desire for the beauty of his people and his desire to take pleasure in his people. And these are the primary reasons God created the male sexual nature so that men would image these attributes of God toward women. And it also why women desire to be indwelled sexually by men and why they desire to make themselves beautiful for men. But God also needed man to be a father to fully image him, therefore he used penile vaginal intercourse in human beings as the means of human reproduction.

The Scriptures clearly tell us in 1 Corinthians 11:9 that God created woman for man and not the man for the woman. Based upon that Biblical principle, we can also rightly say that God created sex for man and even a woman’s ability to experience sexual pleasure was ultimately created to enhance man’s sexual pleasure. And we can affirm that God designed the masculine sexual nature to image his desire for oneness, beauty and pleasure while at the same time affirming that God also commands us to use sex to fulfill his mandate to be fruitful and multiply
